American Jews: From Battlefields to Baseball Fields

Tuesdays, October 8, 15, 22 and 29, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Course Description:

We will explore Jewish men and women who have served and defended America at home and abroad, from the 1650s to the present. We will then learn about the long and colorful history of the Jewish influence on Professional Baseball from the 1860s to the present. It will include the music, rules, traditions, players, owners and executives, much beyond Greenberg, Koufax and the catcher who was a spy.

Facilitator:

Barry Steelman graduated from the Naval Academy and is a Vietnam veteran.  After law school he clerked for the Chief Judge of Maryland’s Federal Court.  He spent over thirty years as a trial attorney litigating complex civil cases.  He taught law school and published in both the Baseball Hall of Fame’s “Memories and Dreams,” and the Naval Academy’s “Shipmate.”  He is on the National Advisory Board of the American Veterans Center.
